Helping new managers lead with confidence
Three years designing and delivering content for IGD’s free New Manager Skills courses.
The context
From team member to manager
Going from team member to line manager is exciting, and daunting. For many first-time managers confidence is low, imposter syndrome kicks in, and managing people on top of everything else feels overwhelming.
IGD’s free New Manager Skills courses give new managers in food, grocery and retail the tools, confidence and mindset to do well. They are free for anyone in the industry.
More than ten years ago, Chloe sat where these participants sit, learning from IGD’s free content herself. For the past three years she has partnered with IGD to design and deliver content alongside their live New Manager programmes, which run several times a year.
What we did
Practical, human learning
Working with IGD’s learning programme managers, we built a practical, human-centred learning experience:
- live masterclasses and panel sessions
- 14 short video modules to help managers reflect, learn and act
- worksheets to embed the learning and guide self-reflection
- interactive leadership quizzes and live webinars, so managers understand their own style.
The focus throughout: helping new managers build confidence, build trust with their teams and handle change well.

The outcome
1,000+ new managers
Why it works
Been in their shoes
“Where I reckon I can add the most value is that I’ve been in the participant’s shoes. I’ve managed teams in both retail and for a big FMCG, and I know how overwhelming it can feel.
By sharing real-life case studies and personal (and often vulnerable) examples alongside simple tools, my intent is always that everyone walks away with something they can use immediately. And a sense of feeling understood.” Chloe

“Thought-provoking, very accessible, and interactive. Chloe delivers in such a relatable way that creates a great connection with people. We love working with her.”Isobel Riley, Head of Learning Programmes, IGD
